Average Joes Cling to Guns and Religion

It’s hard to believe Barrack Obama had the audacity to say that we Americans cling to guns and religion to determine our political views. There are many other reasons that we chose candidates and loyally support our parties.

The first of these is Defense. After all, we all know that Republicans are notorious for being tough on terrorism and are incredible leaders at times of war. Although George W. Bush really has been a poor example of presidential leadership, there are others. Look at Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry Truman, all incredible men who led our soldiers to victory. Oh, wait…they were Democrats. And if Republicans voted for people just because they served in the military, they would have voted for John Kerry over a man who avoided combat. So perhaps defense isn’t a good example.

How about the economy? Republicans stand for cutting spending, being fiscally conservative, and preventing government hand-outs. However, in the Reagan and H.W. Bush years the deficit soared to over four trillion. Clinton, a democrat, turned this around to a 236 billion dollar surplus that was matched with job growth and economic prosperity. In eight years G.W. Bush adopted the same Republican economic philosophies as Reagan and again we have a deficit of trillions. There is a demographic that has prospered. The divide between rich and poor hasn’t been this wide since the great depression. There are a record number of billionaires and companies such as Exxon have posted record profits. Government “hand-outs” increased during Bush years due to the amount of families falling on hard times. Under Barrack Obama things are still rough but he has only been in office for 8 months and economic indicators are already beginning to show promise.

Well republicans do represent us average Joes, right? I mean they are the guys that you could go hunting with and share a beer with. They are regular people who have had to struggle and know what working hard really means. Clinton and Obama both came from poor, single mother households that had to struggle for everything they had and still made it to Harvard and Yale. But democrats are elitists, right? Democrats fight for fair wages, healthcare, and better schools….that sounds pretty blue collar. I own guns, drink beer, and my husband works for the timber industry, but I am not too ignorant to know what party has my family’s best interests in mind.

Hmm…..I guess that does leave religion and guns. This hardly makes since though. We had an evangelical in office for eight years and Roe V. Wade still wasn’t overturned, gays are still getting married, and there is still separation of church and state. As far as guns go no democratic president has ever tried to “take our guns”. These things would require legislation by Congress and the Supreme Court anyways. The NRA tried to convince voters Obama would take away gun rights from law abiding citizens. Last time I checked he actually supported carrying concealed weapons in public parks and thus far has made no attempts to infringe on the right to bear arms.

So why?...WHY do average Americans still think Democrats are trying to destroy the country? Why are they driven by fear and conspiracy? Is it ignorance, too much Glenn Beck? Why do they still call democrats fiscally irresponsible, weak on defense, and elitist even though evidence shows the opposite to be true? Why would they bite the hand that feeds them to support a party that does not represent or protect their way of life? I don’t really know. ……
